Handwritten ink gift presentation inscrptn+date to top edge of recto of colour illustrated frntis.Publisher's bright,crisp, clean,sharp-cornered original dusky cerise cloth boards with a pale blue theatre stage and its participants ilustration decoration to front board,and bright,blocked,similar pale blue lettered spine/backstrip,rear board undecorated and plain; immaculate repeated red,b/w and pink colour illustrated endpapers by A.H. Watson with negligible shelf-wear,bumping,creasing to edges and corners - no nicks,tears or splits present. Head+foot of spine/backstrip minimally bumped with gentle pushing/ creasing.Top edges coloured with some minimal fade towards head of spine's vicinity,fore-edges bright but with minimal, faint and sporadic foxing spots; contents bright,tight,clean,solid and sound - near pristine - no intentional dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread,other than my own collation.UK,8vo HB, minus dw/dj,illustrated,1st edn thus,v-xiipp+1- 232pp [paginated] includes a foreword by Compton Mackenzie,b/w head+tailpiece illustration to contents list/table,b/w headpiece illustrated Illustrations list/table,XXXVI (36) chapters,a colour illustrated frntis,23 b/w line illustrations,13 of which are full-page, remainder with a majority as chapter tailpieces, though some are interspersed within the text - all called for and present and all by Alice Helena Watson.Plus [unpaginated] b/w vignetted half-title page,colour illustrated frntis,and a thumbnail b/w line illustrated title page with dedication to its reverse.  Visually the exterior appearance is more than acceptable,and particularly internally,the book is in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of it's age and nature, i.e. a children's book. It is only the minor exterior faults and missing dw/dj described, that prevents a slightly higher grading. Despite them,it really is an exceptional copy for its cleanliness and brightness. Alice Helena Watson 1896 - 1984. Children's book illustrator,active 1924-58.Born in Cockermouth,Cumbria.Worked in a decorative and sometimes sketchy graphic style that at times showed the influence of Arthur Rackham and E. H. Shepard. She received her first commission in 1923 - to illustrate "Santa Claus in Summer" by Compton MacKenzie.Following it's successful publication in 1924 and her friendship with Mackenzie,by 1931 she had illustrated several more books for him.
